CWmike writes “Dell was the first of the major computer manufacturers to support pre-installed Linux, but it’s not just pre-installing Linux. The Austin, Tex. company is also adding functionality to Ubuntu Linux on its desktops and laptops, writes Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols. It began by adding DVD-playback to its systems shipping with Ubuntu 7.10. With the recent release of Dell PCs with Ubuntu 8.04, Dell is now including “Fluendo GStreamer codices for mp3, wma (Windows Media Audio), and wmv (Windows Media Video) playback” in its latest Ubuntu-powered desktops and laptops. On Ubuntu systems with ATI or NIVDIA graphics, Dell also now supports HDMI output. Yesterday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said his company hopes to steal a page from Apple’s playbook and change how it works with hardware makers in an attempt to duplicate its rival’s success. Is OS customization the way forward for desktop Linux, and Windows?”

Angostura writes “Amazon has provided a decent write-up of the problems that caused its S3 storage service to fail for around 8 hours last Sunday. It providers a timeline of events, the immediate action take to fix it (they pulled the big red switch) and what the company is doing to prevent re-occurrence. In summary: A random bit got flipped in one of the server state messages that the S3 machines continuously pass back and forth. There was no checksum on these messages, and the erroneous information was propagated across the cloud, causing so much inter-server chatter, that no customer work got done.”

snydeq writes “The office of San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris has made public close to 150 usernames and passwords used by various departments to connect to the city’s VPN. The passwords were filed this week as Exhibit A in a court document arguing against a reduction in $5 million bail in the case against Terry Childs. Though they placed the passwords in the public record, city prosecutors do seem to think that they are sensitive. InfoWorld’s Paul Venezia, who has been following the case closely, provides further analysis of the technical details in the city’s case. ‘By themselves, [the passwords] would not be enough to allow anyone to access the network via VPN,’ Venezia writes, ‘but the fact that the city entered them into evidence is quite shocking. At the very least, they’ll have to shut down their VPN access for awhile until they’ve changed them all and modified the configurations of some large number of VPN clients.’”

passionfingers writes “My business users regularly have to tweak large (>32MB text) data files manually. Overlords charged with verifying the aforementioned changes have requested that the little people be provided with a new file editor that will track changes made to a file (as a word processor does). I have scouted around online for such an animal, but to no avail — even commercial offerings like UltraEdit32 don’t offer such a feature. Likewise on the OSS side of the fence, where I expected a Notepad++ plugin or the like, it appears that the requirements to a) open a file containing a large volume of text data and b) track changes to the data, are mutually exclusive. Does anyone in the Slashdot community already have such a beast in their menagerie? Perhaps there is there a commercial offering I’ve missed, or could someone possibly point me to their favorite (stable) OSS project that might measure up?”

51mon writes “Austrian CERT used data from one of their authoritative DNS server to measure the rate at which the latest DNS patch (source port randomization) is being rolled out to larger recursive name servers. While about half the traffic (PDF) they receive is now using source port randomization, their data suggest that this is due to ISPs who roll out such fixes immediately. The rate of patching has fallen to disappointingly low levels since. If your ISP isn’t patched, perhaps it is time to switch.” After details of the DNS vulnerability leaked, researchers |)ruid and HD Moore released attack code; ZDNet’s security blog has an analysis.
