Atheros Releases Free Linux Driver For Its 802.11n Devices

mcgrof writes “Atheros has released a shiny new Atheros driver for all their 11n devices aimed for inclusion in the Linux kernel. This new driver has no proprietary HAL and is licensed under the ISC license, so the BSD community should be able to benefit as well. Note: no firmware required!”

Delivering 8K VFX Shots For the Dark Knight

agent4256 writes “Barbara Robertson over at Studio Daily put forth this article featuring the technical background for the production of The Dark Knight. With most of the film shot with IMAX cameras (producing a theoretical resolution of 18k), the studios could not handle the size. Instead, they cut the resolution by more than half, down to 8K, the maximum resolution for scanned film. ‘A single 8K frame requires 200 MB of data,’ Franklin says. ‘So we had to upgrade our whole infrastructure. We needed faster network speeds to move data around, massively beefed up servers, and — the most important thing — a new compositing solution.’ To give you an idea of how far technology has taken us: ‘In 1999, when we worked on Pitch Black [released in 2000], we needed to access 2 TB of data,’ Franklin says. ‘This show used over 100 TB of data.’”

Thirst For Coltan Fueling African Conflict

MetaPhyzx writes “According to an article put forth by the Toward Freedom website, the metallic ore known as columbite-tantalite or coltan for short is fueling conflict in central Africa. The relevance to us who read news for geeks: Coltan is in quite a few consumer electronics; the article references the Sony Playstation series.” As reader fahrvergnugen points out in the comments below, there’s reason to more than doubt the currency of the claims in the above-linked article, as outlined in a post at Joystiq.

Hacked Oyster Card System Crashes Again

Barence sends along PcPro coverage of the second crash of London’s Oyster card billing system in two weeks. Transport for London was forced to open the gates and allow free travel for all. “There is currently a technical problem with Oyster readers at London Underground stations which is affecting Oyster pay as you go cards only,” explains the TfL website. This follows the first crash two weeks ago, which left 65,000 Oyster cards permanently corrupted. Speculation is increasing that the crashes may be related to the hacking of the Oyster card system by Dutch researchers from Radboud University, though TfL denies any link. Plans to publish details of the hack were briefly halted when the makers of the chip used in the system sued the group, although a judge ruled earlier this week that the researchers could go ahead. During the court action, details briefly leaked on website Wikileaks.

Microsoft Engineers Invent Displays That Top LCDs For Efficiency

MechEMark writes with this excerpt from a hope-inspiring article at the IEEE Spectrum, which says “Researchers from Microsoft say they’ve built a prototype of a display screen using a technology that essentially mimics the optics in a telescope but at the scale of individual display pixels. The result is a display that is faster and more energy efficient than a liquid crystal display, or LCD, according to research reported yesterday in Nature Photonics … The design greatly increases the amount of backlight that reaches the screen. The researchers were able to get about 36 percent of the backlight out of a pixel, more than three times as much light as an LCD can deliver. But Microsoft senior research engineer Michael Sinclair says that through design improvements, he expects that number to go up — theoretically, as high as 75 percent.”

Robocars As the Best Way Geeks Can Save the Planet

Most CF Cards Fail DMA Transfers

Anomalyst writes “In his quest to create an open source video camera, Andrey Filippov of elphel.com has determined that most Compact Flash devices, although claiming to be DMA capable, do not perform Direct Memory Access transfers correctly. This means successful movement of data to and from the device takes much more time with DMA disabled.” The culprit appears to be the controller chip packaged with most of the CF cards Filippov tried. We last visited Elphel and their work on open source digital cameras in 2002. Filippov gave a Tech Talk at Google last year.

Scientists Pave Way For 25nm CPUs

arcticstoat writes in with word that scientists at the Space Nanotechnology Laboratory at MIT have found a new way of extending Moore’s law into the future — they have succeeded in etching a grid of 25nm lines into a silicon wafer. The article notes that this technique could be used for writing the grid on which chips are laid down, but that the electronic elements would have to be written using more complex techniques. “[Researchers] created an interference pattern using light from a laser with a wavelength of 351 nm. The pattern consists of alternating light and dark zones repeating every 200 nm. This allowed them to etch 25-nm lines into a silicon wafer, each 175 nm apart. They then repeated the process three times, each time shifting the interference pattern by 50 nm and etching another 25-nm groove. The resulting grid has alternating 25-nm stripes and grooves…”
